WWZ increases performance and prices: when an Internet plan upgrade does not replace switching
WWZ has announced adjustments to Internet and Mobile plans for July 2026: depending on their plan, customers will receive higher Internet speeds or more mobile data, while the monthly price will increase. At first, this sounds like automatic added value. However, what matters is not whether a plan looks better on paper, but whether the additional performance is actually used in your household.
This is why a Swiss Internet plan upgrade deserves a closer comparison. If you already have enough bandwidth or rarely use all your mobile data, the higher price may mainly mean paying for unused capacity.
What WWZ is changing in July 2026
According to the WWZ announcement on the performance adjustment, existing Internet and Mobile offers will be upgraded. Affected customers are expected to benefit from higher fixed-line Internet speeds and more data with Mobile plans. At the same time, higher monthly plan fees are planned.
Whether your plan is affected, and to what extent, depends on the specific product and contract. These three details in the customer information are particularly relevant:
- the previous and new monthly price
- the previous and new Internet speed or the new mobile data volume
- the date of the change and any contractual or cancellation conditions
The higher performance is not without value. It can be a useful addition to a plan that was previously somewhat limited. Nevertheless, an automatic upgrade does not replace a market comparison: a provider can improve an existing product and still be more expensive than a suitable alternative.
When higher Internet speed really makes a difference
Many households overestimate the benefit of very high download speeds. For normal browsing, video calls, online banking, music streaming and individual TV streams, a moderate, stable connection is already sufficient. Several applications running at the same time do not automatically require a Gigabit plan.
More bandwidth can be worthwhile, however, if several of the following situations occur regularly in your household:
- Four or more people use video streaming, video calls or cloud services at the same time.
- Very large files, games or software updates are downloaded frequently.
- You regularly work with large cloud backups or send extensive files.
- The connection becomes noticeably slow at peak times, even though the Wi-Fi and devices are set up correctly.
- You use many data-intensive devices at the same time, such as several 4K streams, games consoles and home-office workstations.
Important: higher speed does not solve every Internet problem. Poor Wi-Fi reception, badly positioned devices, old routers or overloaded wireless channels remain issues even with a faster connection. Before upgrading, therefore, check whether the measured speed is too low at the connection itself or only over the Wi-Fi at home. More mobile data: valuable only if you use it outside Wi-Fi
With a Mobile plan, the key question is simpler: how much data do you actually use on the mobile network? If you spend most of your time connected to Wi-Fi at home, at work or in public places, a larger data package often offers little benefit.
A higher mobile data allowance can make sense if you frequently stream videos while out and about, use your phone’s hotspot for work, regularly send large files over the mobile network or work on the train without Wi-Fi. Travel can also be relevant—but only if the additional allowance applies in the respective roaming region. Data included in Switzerland is not automatically available abroad.

Compare the effective price, not just the new price
A higher price is not automatically unfair if the additional performance is clearly useful to you. For the financial decision, however, the effective price over one year matters. To calculate it, do not look only at the advertised monthly price.

First, check your personal message from WWZ and note the old and new prices. Then compare your needs with the performance that will be included in the future. If your Internet has always worked reliably and you have never reached any data or speed limits, the upgrade may not provide a practical benefit.
