Mobile network or budget brand? What market shares reveal about choosing a mobile plan

Anyone looking for an affordable mobile plan in Switzerland encounters many names: traditional network operators, their secondary brands and independent resellers. This makes the choice appear broader than it actually is when looking at the physical network infrastructure. The Swiss mobile market shares published by ComCom at the end of 2025 help put this structure into perspective. However, they are not enough to assess the quality of your specific plan.

What matters is not only how many customers a brand has. You should know which network your plan uses, which services are included in the plan and where restrictions may apply.

Three major networks, many brands

The market-share statistics of the Federal Communications Commission ComCom group the Swiss mobile market by provider groups. At the end of 2025, by far the largest share of mobile connections belonged to the three network operator groups Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. ComCom also lists brands that belong to these groups or use their networks.

The statistics primarily answer a market question: how are mobile connections distributed? They do not automatically answer which plan is best suited to you.

You can find the current figures and the allocation of provider groups directly at ComCom. When reading them, remember that a market share counts connections, not the satisfaction of individual customers, network coverage at your home or data performance on your commuter train.

TermWhat it meansWhat this means for you
Network operatorOperates its own mobile antennas and core network infrastructure.Network coverage and technical development primarily depend on this network.
Secondary brandA brand belonging to the same corporate group, usually with a different pricing and distribution focus. It can use the same network but have different plan rules, support channels or options.
ResellerSells mobile offers on another company’s network. The network and plan conditions must be checked separately.

Same brand name, same network? Not necessarily

The common assumption that «a major brand means a good network» is too simplistic. You should distinguish between three levels:

  • Brand: This is the name on the bill, website and advertising.
  • Mobile network used: This network connects your smartphone to the mobile network.
  • Specific plan: It determines data volume, speed, roaming, additional options and, in some cases, support.

An affordable secondary brand may run on the network of a major network operator. This is an important indication of basic coverage. However, it does not automatically mean that all plan details are identical to those of the main brand. Conversely, an expensive brand name is no proof that a particular plan is faster everywhere or better suited to your habits.

Affiliations can also change: cooperation arrangements between retail brands, resellers and network operators are occasionally adjusted. When signing up, always check the current product page and the contract information for the plan you want. For an initial market overview, you can find offers in the mobile plan comparison.

What network tests actually tell you

Independent network tests complement market-share data, but do not replace checking the places that matter to you. connect’s 2026 mobile network test assesses Swiss networks using measurement drives, walk tests and crowdsourcing data. The full connect network test 2026 shows how close the three networks are in the overall national assessment and where differences were measured for voice, data and availability.

For your choice, however, remember that a national test result is an average. In a home with thick walls, in a particular mountain valley or on your train route, the result may look different. The relevant question is therefore not «Which network is generally the best?», but: Which network works reliably in the places I regularly spend time?

Check the relevant network operator’s coverage map, especially for these places:

  • home address and indoor areas
  • workplace or place of education
  • regular commuting routes
  • holiday home, campsite or mountain regions
  • places where you often make calls or use a hotspot

Five criteria that matter more than market share

1. Network coverage and reception on site

The coverage map shows expected reception, but does not guarantee reception in every room. Also make sure that your smartphone supports the relevant 4G and 5G frequencies. If possible, test the network you want with a prepaid SIM or ask people around you about their experience at the specific location.

2. Data performance and possible prioritisation

A plan can include unlimited data and still impose speed conditions. Some offers state a maximum data rate, while others reduce performance after a certain level of usage or with an additional option. How network capacity is prioritised in individual cases is not communicated equally transparently by all offers.

So do not compare only the word «unlimited», but also:

  • maximum speed in Switzerland
  • rules after high data usage
  • 5G access and any surcharges
  • hotspot and tethering use

3. Roaming is a separate plan issue

The Swiss network does not help you abroad. A plan can be very affordable in Switzerland but include little roaming data or incur high costs for additional packages. Check the country zone, included data volume, validity period of data packages and prices for calls and SMS.

If you regularly travel abroad or spend time in border regions, you should give roaming more weight than a small monthly price difference. You can find more information in the guide to mobile services and plans.

4. Monthly price and contract conditions

A promotional price is only a good deal if you know how long the discount lasts. Check the regular price afterwards, the minimum contract term, cancellation periods and activation fees. Market shares say nothing about these points.

5. Customer support and self-service

Digital brands often rely on apps, chat and online support. This can be efficient if you want to manage changes yourself. If you prefer using a hotline or shop when problems arise, compare availability, contact channels and possible costs before signing up.

What this means for choosing a Swiss mobile plan

ComCom’s figures show a concentrated market with three central network infrastructures and a much broader brand landscape. For you, this creates choice: you can select a plan based on price, service and roaming without necessarily committing to a specific network group.

The sensible order is therefore: first determine the network that suits the places you spend time, then compare plans on that network. Afterwards, check data rules, use abroad and support. This helps you avoid confusing a well-known brand name or a low introductory price with mobile performance that actually suits your needs.
